I waited to be able to patch before posting a reply... but, actually, all went fine for me. (New client.)

1) Do you have the new or the old client?

2) Can you try this (in the case you correctly updated but the last change was not correctly made in your files):

- Just start the launcher, don't go further, do NOT accept the EULA

- Open the AO folder and open the file "version.id" with Notepad

- Change whatever version number you have (something like 18.8.45_EP1) to 18.8.46_EP2

- Save the file, accept the EULA, and try playing

Does that work?

There is NO rename.ini file in a final install. It's a temporary file used in patching.

1) Go there :
Download full AO installs here if you can't patch/install
http://www.athenpaladins.org/forums/vie ... f=5&t=9825 (AP private link)

And download the "CLASSIC "OLD" ENGINE Client"
Unzip it in any clean new folder you want
Start AO
Let it patch

Later you'll copy your profiles from your old install.

If after patching you still have the issue, try this

Patched well for me.

No trace of rename.ini in any of my AO folders.
I guess it's a temporary element appearing during patch and deleted when all went well.

So i assume it means your patching unrailed ...

To solve : if you have a backup of AO, restore & update ; otherwise reinstall (save prefs before).

I'll look into removing absolutely everything from AO and I'll post.

During the install can you turn any anti-virus / anti malware OFF?

To be honest, if you don't have a risky behavior with unknown software, no web protection and anti-tracking in your browser, visiting suspicious sites, and clicking on links here and everywhere and in bizarre emails, you can stick with Windows 10 Defender and the built-in Windows firewall which has much more options than people think (and you can perfectly control Windows' privacy concerns with O&O Win Shutup https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 which is totally free).

If not, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition (https://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html) should do the job fine.

If you need more options, then the paid version of Bitdefender Antivirus (often discounted on the site below 19 euros for the first year). Advice: explore pricing offers on the site and uncheck yearly auto-renewal (same issues with most AVs on the market.)

But I guess you don't want Win10 (sooner or later, though...). In this case Bitdefender free (or paid) will also work well on Win 8.x.
